Pittsboro, N.C. — A man burned to death late Sunday at the Bells Church Fishing Area at Jordan Lake, Chatham County authorities said Monday.
People fishing off the pier told authorities that they saw a large flame and heard a scream in the upper parking lot at about 10:30 p.m. When they went to investigate, they found a man on fire, but they were unable to save him.
Authorities said witnesses didn't see anybody or any vehicles leaving the area at the time, and a preliminary investigation shows no indication of foul play.
Investigators are trying to determine if the man committed suicide or if the fireball erupted by accident.
The man's body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for identification.
