Man facing slew of charges after fleeing wreck

A man, who was wanted for probation violation, was arrested Friday after he fled the scene of a traffic collision, authorities said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A man, who was wanted for a probation violation, was arrested Friday after he fled the scene of a traffic collision, authorities said.

According to arrest warrants, Robert Timothy Atkins, of 3310 Wickslow Road in Wilmington, was involved in a traffic collision at 8408 Saltwood Lane in Raleigh.

Instead of alerting authorities to the crash, Atkins continued to drive the vehicle, which had been reported stolen, until he was arrested on Brier Creek Parkway, authorities said.

Atkins was charged with fleeing to elude arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to stop after an accident resulting in property damage and violating probation.

According to state Department of Correction records, Atkins was charged with DWI, reckless driving, speeding and identity theft in September.At the time of that arrest, Atkins listed 10260 Strome Ave. in Raleigh as his home address.

Atkins was given probation for a December 2008 drug possession conviction. He had a previous drug conviction in Florida.

Atkins was being held Saturday in the Wake County jail under an $85,000 bond. He is due in court on Monday.
