LITTLETON, N.C. — A Halifax County man drowned late Sunday after jumping out of a boat into a farm pond, authorities said.

Ricardo Ponce Trejo was in a boat with another man on a farm pond behind 14022 N.C. Highway 48 in Littleton Sunday when he said he was hot and jumped into the water, authorities said.

Witnesses said Trejo resurfaced one time and yelled for help before going back under the water. The other man in the boat asked people on shore to call 911 before he jumped into the pond to try to rescue Trejo, authorities said.

The man was unable to find Trejo under the water, authorities said.

Authorities found Trejo's body Monday morning.

It was unclear if Trejo knew how to swim, authorities said, adding that they don't suspect foul play in his death.
