DURHAM, N.C. — A man trying to park Wednesday morning outside a Durham-area Cracker Barrel hit the gas rather than the brakes and launched his car onto the restaurant's porch.

The incident happened just after 10:30 a.m. at the Cracker Barrel at 3703 Hillsborough Road, according to Durham Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

The Toyota Tercel clipped a handicapped parking sign and a bench on the porch before coming to stop. Police believe that steel cables used to anchor chairs on the restaurant porch stopped the car just short of the building.

The driver, whom police identified only as a man in his 70s, was not injured.

Michael said the accident caused about $3,500 in damage.
