Man dies in Wayne County house fire, sheriff says

A man died Saturday afternoon in a Wayne County house fire, officials said.

PIKEVILLE, N.C. — A 79-year-old man died Saturday afternoon in a Wayne County house fire, officials said.

The fire was reported around 12:15 p.m.

The Nahunta, Pikeville-Pleasant Grove and Little River Volunteer Fire Departments arrived at 120 Weathervane Road in Pikeville to find a two story home on fire.

During te extinguishment and search of the home, 79-year-old Landis Jones was found on the first floor of the home.

The male subject, identified at Landis Jones (79 years of age, lived at the residence) was deceased when he was brought outside of the home. The Wayne County Office of Emergency Services (fire marshal) was contacted for assistance in determining the origin and cause of the fire.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Wayne County Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.
