— A Robeson County man was killed Wednesday night after his car skidded off an icy road in Hoke County, authorities said Thursday.

Calvin Baldwin, 48, of Lumber Bridge, was headed southwest on Old Wire Road at about 7:45 p.m. when he lost control of his car and rolled down an embankment, authorities said.

Baldwin, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car and killed, authorities said. He was the only person in the car.

Authorities said they don't suspect drugs or alcohol as a factor in the crash.

I live near this road and it is still terrible. It is a shame that all the other secondary roads were plowed but not Old Wire or Edinburgh road. Praying for his family!

In his case, we'll never know if it may have made a difference.

And by the way, don't know what you're reading, but millions of lives have been saved since seat belt use was mandated - especially the lives of children.

    They don't always save lives..
No, they don't ALWAYS save lives, but more times than not, they do. The Odds are significantly in your favor if you wear one.

Driving on an ice road with no seat belt on. So unfair to his loved ones.
