FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A suspect pursued by police Thursday afternoon shot himself in the head before crashing into the deck of a house, police said.

Ron Anthony Grant, 24, of 260 Bonanza Drive, Fayetteville, later died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, police said.

The chase began shortly after 12:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of Bragg Boulevard when officers tried to pull over a green Mercury Grand Marquis that matched the description of a vehicle involved in several recent business robberies, police said.

The chase went down Santa Fe Drive, Yadkin Road, Reilly Road, Skibo Road, Cliffdale Road All-American Freeway and Murchison Road before Grant turned off onto Brenda Drive, police said.

Grant shot himself in the head while the car was still in motion, police said. The car then hit a police cruiser and the deck of a home at the corner of Brenda Drive and Austin Street, police said.

Grant was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he later died. A police officer in the cruiser that was hit also was taken to Cape Fear Valley for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
