Man dies after being hit by car on Raleigh sidewalk

Posted June 12, 2012

— A 62-year-old Raleigh man who was struck by a car on Glenwood Avenue over the weekend died Tuesday afternoon at WakeMed, according to the hospital.

Police said Mahmoud "Sammy" Ismail Abdelalim was standing on the sidewalk around 5 p.m. Saturday when a car ran a red light and struck an oncoming vehicle. The second vehicle, driven by 18-year-old Wisam Adnan Al-Dwejhi, ran off the road and hit Abdelalim.

Police said Shana Hoffman Barefoot, 66, was turning left from Hollyridge Drive onto Glenwood when she went through the red light and struck Al-Dwejhi's Audi.

Barefoot was charged with driving without an operator's license and failure to yield the right of way.

Something that definitely didn't need to happen. Sorry for all involved.

"everyone is so quick to lay blame! It was an accident." - basharoo

An innocent man is dead because someone who had no legal right to be driving ran a red light, so its not hard to find the blame here.

"Barefoot was charged with driving without an operator's license and failure to yield the right of way."

    That's all!?!

How about murder or at least manslaughter for driving without a license.

The guy didn't die immediately... so they may upgrade the charges.

So sad, prayers to his family and that poor 18 yr old driver, he must be heart broken too

Very sad. Prayers to the family. Prayers also to the 18-year-old driver who was inadvertently involved through no fault of his own, but who will surely be traumatized by what happened.

@Basharoo - We are quick to blame because this lady has NO license to drive.
If she wasn't on the road, this could have been avoidable.

Yes, this was an "accident" but there is blame here, and the blame goes on the lady who shouldn't have been driving - Paying attention or not has nothing to do with this... She was turning left on a red light anyways. More reason to blame.

everyone is so quick to lay blame! It was an accident. Not like anyone meant to hurt anyone. Who hasn't almost been in one because, for a moment, you were not paying attention? Prayers are with the family.

And why isn't this person being charged with vehicular manslaughter? This person was driving without a liscence and ran a red light!

I hope Barefoot will now be charged in Mr. Abdelalim's death. She had no business driving that vehicle and now this poor man and his loved ones have to pay the horrible price. So sad you can't even stand on a sidewalk without having to worry. I do also feel for Mr. Al-Dwejhi, who by no fault of his own hit the victim; his life also forever changed.
