FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say a man died Friday afternoon following a shooting involving Cumberland County sheriff's deputies at a Sonic Drive-In, but they aren't saying how he died.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that the man became confrontational with two deputies who pulled him over on Cliffdale Road to serve an arrest warrant.

At some point, authorities said, Brian Burch, 38, armed with a knife, started cutting his arms and neck before cutting one of the deputies on the hand.

The other deputy fired at Burch, striking him at least once, according to investigators.

Deputies first tried to subdue him with a stun gun, but that failed, leading to a struggle between Burch and deputies.

Sources close to the case told WRAL News that the man had a box cutter and that, after he was shot by the deputy, he began cutting himself from his wrist to elbow.

Authorities haven't said where the deputy shot Burch or how the man died. The deputies' names have been released.

Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler declined to comment on the investigation.

"We're not in a position to answer a lot of questions – or any questions at this time," he said.

Fayetteville police are investigating the case, and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal investigation.
