— A man was critically injured early Friday after he lost control of his car and hit a state Department of Transportation vehicle on Interstate 40 between Aviation Parkway and Harrison Avenue.

According to Highway Patrol officials, Travis Blalock, of Raleigh, slammed into a DOT Incident Management Assistance Patrol vehicle while traveling eastbound on I-40 at about 12:40 a.m.

The IMAP truck had stopped to assist another driver that had crashed due to standing water in the highway.

Blalock was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, troopers said. No other injuries were reported.

i was the imap dispatcher last night and watched the whole thing happen on the traffic camera. the man that was critically injured was in the left lane, he didnt slow down where thestanding water was. he then lost control and corssed all lanes while doing a 180 and hit the imap truck that was parked on the right shoulder. the imap drivers were able to jump into the ditch in time to avoid being stuck themselves. so it wasnt that he rear ended the imap truck, he was unable to avoid hitting them. if he had slowed down for the high water, which the message board was telling people to do, he might not have lost control.

Oh you are SO correct. I see things every single day, usually on the way home, that make me wonder how they stay alive driving on the roads; cutting people off, just pulling right in front of someone because they want to be there-with absolutely no regard whatsoever as to what that does to the one they cut off. It's almost like they think they are the ONLY car on the road....BP goes up every afternoon....

You should automatically lose your license if you rear end a service/emergency vehicle on the shoulder of the road. Period.

--I travel I-40 every day. It's amazing what some people appear not to know. I'd swear that some people's IQ drops 50 points when they get behind the wheel.

Glad that the stranded motorist and the DOT IMAP driver were unhramed.

@localyokel - from the first paragraph it sounds like Mr. Blalock lost control of the vehicle and that may have caused him to strike the IMAP truck. One other car had already spun out due to standing water.

Wouldn't suprise me if he was traveling faster than conditions dictated.

Don't people know to slow down and change lanes when they see flashing lights?

    Prayers go out to him!

    Charges for Travis Blalock?

If you hit a vehicle that's on the shoulder with bright flashing lights assisting others you may be a bad driver.
