Henderson, N.C. — A man pulled over by Henderson police Friday afternoon fired on officers, fled from them and then shot and killed himself, police said.
Police did not say why they stopped the vehicle at Winder and Harriet streets just after 1:30 p.m. When approached, the driver pulled a gun and fired, but missed the officer.
The officer returned fire, police said.
The suspect then drove off, stopped on Boothe Avenue and jumped from his car and ran, police said.
Officers cornered the man on Bullock Street. When confronted, the man turned his gun on himself and fired. He was taken to a local hospital, but died of the self-inflicted injury, police said.
Henderson police did not release the name of the man or the officers involved.
The State Bureau of Investigation will look into the case, a standard practice whenever a law enforcement officer fires his weapon.
