Man Charged With Trying to Run Down Officer

Posted July 4, 2007

— A man was arrested Tuesday on charges that he tried to run over a police officer Monday while leaving the scene of a car break-in.

An off-duty officer saw a man breaking into a car in a Target parking lot Monday morning and called for assistance, police said. Officer Alvaro Elias arrived at the scene as the man was attempting to drive off, and when Elias got out of his patrol car, the man tried to run him over, police said.

Elias fired several shots at the car as it drove away, police said.

The vehicle was later found abandoned near Bailey, police said.

Linwood Bernard Murchison has been charged with assault on a government official with a deadly weapon and two counts of breaking, entering and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Elias has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the shooting is reviewed, police said.

wasn't there a female officer that was just "let go" because she shot at a driver/car that was coming straight at her, but she was found guilty of breaking policy of shooting at a vehicle/theif even though he was stealing her car and driving straight for her. This driver was driving away and still the off-duty officer shot at him. I hope they catch the theif and I hope police departments review the policy with officers...I'd hate for this well-meaning officer to be let go too. At least he attempted to take a "bad guy" off the streets.

Maybe the officer dis-respected the man? LOL - Does that remind anyone of somebody? I hope this piece of garbage gets more then just probation and glad the office is alright.

Too bad Elias didn't hit the target! It would have been one less worthless piece of trash to worry about! I HATE thieves!!

that officer needs more time at the training range to learn how to hit what he shoots at ie: the driver , then we wouldnt have to support him in the prison system or society later when he gets out.

The officer will be cleared and the thug will probably get off with probation.

They may say that the officer was out of danger when he fired after being hit, if that is the way it happened, but as we just saw, the driver can turn around and come back to kill. I hate a thief for profit, but I despise all the more one who would harm someone to escape the crime.
