Man charged with slaying brother-in-law

Posted October 6, 2008

— The Vance County Sheriff's Office arrested and charged a Henderson man in the fatal shooting of his brother-in-law Saturday night.

Deputies responded to a call about a domestic dispute and possible shooting at 630 S. Cokesbury Road around 9 p.m. They found Charles Ray Steed, 55, lying on the back steps of the home.

Steed, of 596 S. Cokesbury Road, had been shot once in the abdomen with a small-caliber handgun, deputies said. He was transported to Maria Parham Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Deputies charged Steed's brother-in-law and neighbor, Hammond Allen Hight, 39, of 630 S. Cokesbury Road, with first-degree murder.

A judge denied Hight bond at his first court appearance Monday. He was being held at the Vance County Jail Monday afternoon.

Just pray for this family. What a sad world we live. All some believe in is killing each other. These same people need to learn to walk away from certain situations like this.

Either way he is dead. That is too close for comfort anyways, especially if things don't go right with what is happening with Sis at any given time. Prayers for both families. Actually where is Sis in this picture anyways

It seems that when information is warranted WRAL don't provide it. Why not speculate, like it was done witht he 2 Fatalies in Lee County.
