Man charged with DWI, hit-and-run after pedestrian struck

Posted December 3, 2009

— Chapel Hill police say a 40-year-old man was drunk when he hit an elderly pedestrian on West Franklin Street, drove away from the scene and tried to flee from police late Wednesday night.

Police said a black SUV driven by Cole Andrew Buchman hit Earl Greer as he was crossing at 409 W. Franklin St. shortly before midnight.

Greer, 65, was treated at UNC Hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. He was listed in fair condition Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after, police spotted the vehicle near Market Street, in the Meadowmont area. Buchman refused to halt and only stopped when he was blocked in by officers, police said. He later refused to submit to a breath test.

Buchman, of 122 Mallard Court, was charged with DWI, felony hit and run, driving with a revoked license, failing to stop for an accident and fleeing to elude arrest. He was placed in the Orange County Jail under a $500 secured bond.

Looks like he had a conference with one of those big black flashlights, too.

".. driving with a revoked license.." which means most likely he doesn't have insurance. The poor gentleman got hit will probably have to pay for all the medical bills himself or it might ended up on the tax payers/public tab. Could the police atleast hold the SUV for restitution payment? Just curious.

Really? Two felonies, a DWI, and a couple petty misd. charges and all he got was a %500 secured bond? I've gotten more out of a magistrate for charging someone for 1 misd...glad I don't work in Orange Co...

My goal is to never walk the streets in the triangle. We were just ranked one of the highest in the nation for pedestrian fatalities.

Of course he'll be back driving drunk this afternoon. Let's hope this time he crashes into the moron who set his bond at $500.00.

I've got to agree. What in the world was the magistrate thinking? I think I smell a smelt.
