— Raleigh police arrested a 39-year-old man they say attacked his mother late on Christmas Day.

Investigators said that William Haywood Jr. attacked his mother at 811 Beverly Drive shortly before midnight Thursday. His mother defended herself with a knife, and Haywood sustained a cut on his hand, police said.

Haywood faces charges of simple assault. He was being processed in the Wake County Jail Friday morning.

Haywood was convicted of being a habitual felon in Wake County in 2000 and served nearly seven years in prison, according to state Department of Correction records.

In January, he was given probation for assault with a deadly weapon. His criminal record dates to 1987 and includes convictions for selling drugs.

fatchance: what world do you live in? Maybe I think you are responsible for this since you are aiding and abetting by paying taxes which furnish the NC correctional facilities with funds to operate on...your suggestion is ridiculous.

You know what would solve alot of these problems? Accountability by those responsible for letting someone like this walk the streets. Perhaps when someone is on prohbation for violent crimes and they are able to commit another violent crime, the person or persons responsible for them being free should stand trial along with them. If the prohbation system is going to just turn them loose and look the other way, then they should face charges also. It's a flagrant failure of the court system to protect soceity. Those responsible should be held accountible.

I agree with the other statements... He did 7 yrs in 2000 and then was given probation in January... For assault with a deadly weapon. This is what's wrong with NC's judicial system and this is why our jails & prisons should not be so luxurious. Criminals get out of jail and don't really care so much if they have to go back.

Convicted of being a "Habitual Felon" in 2000 yet given probation for an "Assault with a Deadly Weapon" charge.........?
Where in the heck is the logical thinking in the court system?

Wow, sounds like a great guy. Glad the Mom did what she had to do. What is it with Christmas that brings the best out of some, and the pure evil out of others?
