Man charged with assaulting brother, deputy, EMS

An Enfield man faces charges of fighting with his brother and then assaulting a Halifax County sheriff's deputy and medical workers Sunday.

ENFIELD, N.C. — An Enfield man faces charges of fighting with his brother and then assaulting a Halifax County sheriff's deputy and medical workers Sunday.

Authorities said that Deputy Chris Hawkins responded to reports of a fight between Don Fenner and Billy Fenner at N.C. Highway 481. Hawkins found that Don Fenner was bleeding from the mouth and called EMS.

While Don Fenner was getting medical treatment, Billy Fenner tried to assault him, authorities said. Hawkins intervened, and Billy Fenner also assaulted him and EMS personnel.

Billy Fenner was treated for his injuries, then arrested and transported to the Halifax County Jail.

He was charged with simple assault, assault on a government worker, assault on emergency personnel and resisting a public officer. He was being held Sunday on a $2,000 bond.

According to state Department of Correction records, Billy Fenner was convicted of attempted first-degree rape in 1982 and served more than 2 years in prison.
