Man charged in violent Raleigh crime spree returned to NC
A 21-year-old man who is charged in a deadly crime spree along Raleigh's Capital Boulevard was returned to Wake County Wednesday after spending the last two months in custody in New York City.
Posted — UpdatedKendrick Keyanti Gregory, of 8327 Bratt Ave., Wake Forest, was indicted by a Wake County jury last month on 10 charges, including murder, several counts of robbery, assault and kidnapping and first-degree rape.
Investigators say Gregory shot and killed 64-year-old Thomas Melvin Durand, owner of the Mr. Pawn check cashing shop on Capital Boulevard, on Aug. 31.
Police say Gregory raped a 15-year-old girl after he shot Durand, and he's also charged with shooting and robbing another man earlier the same day.
Gregory was arrested in Brooklyn when New York police officers used a mobile phone app to track an SUV that had been reported stolen in Manhattan. Police said he had a .45-caliber handgun in his pocket and another gun under the driver's seat when he was arrested.
New York police have charged Gregory with with grand larceny and two counts of possession of a loaded weapon.
After his arrest, Gregory fought extradition to North Carolina for weeks. He is scheduled to make a court appearance Thursday afternoon.
