Man charged in shooting that wounded one at Fayetteville apartment complex

A 48-year-old Hope Mills man was charged Thursday morning in connection with a shooting that wounded a 19-year-old at an apartment complex in Fayetteville, police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 48-year-old Hope Mills man was charged Thursday morning in connection with a shooting that wounded a 19-year-old at an apartment complex in Fayetteville, police said. 

Donald Lee Nichols, of 3201 Old Oak Lane, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. 

According to investigators, Nichols, an employee of the Eagle Point Village Apartments on Cliffdale Road, confronted Demarcus Turner at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday near the complex's pool. 

During a physical altercation between the men, Nichols shot Turner in the leg. Turner was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and later transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was listed in stable condition Thursday morning. 

Investigators did not release other details about what may have led to the altercation. 

Nichols was in the Cumberland County jail Thursday morning. His bond amount was not released.
