— A 48-year-old Hope Mills man was charged Thursday morning in connection with a shooting that wounded a 19-year-old at an apartment complex in Fayetteville, police said.

Donald Lee Nichols, of 3201 Old Oak Lane, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

According to investigators, Nichols, an employee of the Eagle Point Village Apartments on Cliffdale Road, confronted Demarcus Turner at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday near the complex's pool.

During a physical altercation between the men, Nichols shot Turner in the leg. Turner was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and later transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was listed in stable condition Thursday morning.

Investigators did not release other details about what may have led to the altercation.

Why must you play the race card at every turn? You cannot fathom that people are responsible for their own actions and your blaming guns or racism or some other "ism" for people's actions is a symptom of what is wrong with this country.

The old unknown suspect again. Either the guy that was shot or someone, knows who did it but does not have the personal integrity or moral courage to stand up.
