Man charged in deadly I-440 wrong-way crash could face 17 years in jail
The man charged in a deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 440 made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon at the Wake County Justice Center.
Posted — UpdatedCarlos Martinez Gonzalez, 40, is charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and driving without a license in Sunday's crash near Exit 10 (Wake Forest Road) in Raleigh.
Prosecutors said that Gonzalez faces the possibility of 17 years in prison if convicted, and is being held on an immigration detainer.
Investigators said Gonzalez was driving east in the westbound lanes when he hit 59-year-old Pareshkumar Shah at about 9:20 p.m.
Both drivers were transported to WakeMed following the crash. Shah died there as a result of his injuries.
According to jail records, Gonzalez has a history of driving-related offenses, including DWI and driving with a revoked license dating back to 2006 in Mecklenburg, Wake and Randolph counties.
He is being held on a $200,000 bond and is due back in court on November 15.
