AYDEN, N.C. — The Pitt County Sheriff's Office has charged an Ayden man with setting fire to five abandoned buildings in the past 15 months.

Albert Jeffery Manning, 46, of 7877 County Home Road, faces five counts of arson and one count of failure to register as a sex offender. He was placed in the Pitt County jail under a $35,000 bond.

Investigators say they arrested Manning Wednesday on an outstanding warrant for failure to register as a sex offender. When questioned, the sheriff's office said, he confessed to all five fires, as well as two more in Beaufort County.

Manning gave investigators specific details about how he set each fire and why he did it, the sheriff's office said, but it did not disclose those details.

Three of the fires were set on County Home Road, where Manning lives.
