— A man has been charged in a hit-and-run that killed a Sanford man last weekend, state troopers said Tuesday.

Gerald Campbell, 18, of Sanford, was charged with felony hit-and-run in the death of David Schultz, 38, of Sanford. Investigators said Schultz was walking in the middle of Ponderosa Road in Harnett County, north of Highway 27, when he was struck by a vehicle and dragged several feet.

Campbell was questioned and his vehicle was seized Monday. Investigators said they found blood and tissue on the blue 2000 Chevy Blazer.

Campbell was cooperative after he was found, troopers said.

Schultz’s girlfriend, Shirley Becker, said Schultz had been at a party at her house Saturday night when he had too much to drink and got out of control. He left the party and was walking in the roadway when he was hit.

If you ran someone over and dragged them under your vehicle, would you want to stop and look? The kid probably got scared.

Stupid on both parties. He should have never gotten drunk and walked down the middle of a road at night, and this boy should have stopped. If he had only pulled over and called authorities, he wouldn't be facing a felony right now.

One cannot be charged with drunk and disorderly on private property. The statute says it has to be in a public place. He could have been arrested for trespassing but only if the property owner requested that and only after he was told to leave. Why didn't someone at the party offer to take him home unless they were all drunk. And yes the Sheriff's Office could have taken him home but they are not a taxi service and had absolutely NO obligation to do so. So the moral of this story is... Don't get drunk and walk in the middle of the road at night.

@wolfpack32, my thoughts exactly. But I am wondering, was the guy in the literal middle of the road? If so, why did the driver cross the center line of the road--especially being Ponderosa Road was recently re-painted and the yellow is very visible.

re:" Non-fictional law enforcement cannot arrest and confine someone without cause."

Hmmm, they didn't have any problem taking the Marine into custody and toting him to a psych facility with no charges ever being filed simply because he made some disparaging remarks about the government on Facebook.

Guess what? Only in Mayberry do they allow Otis to sleep it off with no charges. Non-fictional law enforcement cannot arrest and confine someone without cause.

Arrest him for what? Do you know that he was disorderly? The GF probably told them not to arrest him, she just wanted them to "take him in". Since when did deputies become babysitters for drunk people?

If the kid had just stopped and called the police, I bet he wouldn't have been charged...
