Man charged in Durham bank robbery

Posted April 15, 2011

— Police charged a Durham man in the Friday morning robbery of a local bank.

A man walked into the Wachovia branch at 3600 N. Duke St. at about 9:35 a.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money, police said. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The robber was described as white, 6 feet tall, with a slender build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with "USMC" in white letters on it and dark pants.

A short time later, officers took a man matching that description into custody at an apartment complex at 901 Chalk Level Road, police said.

Gavin Clapp, 40, of 901 Chalk Level Road, was charged with common-law robbery and was being held in the Durham County jail under a $10,000 bond.

rule #1: If you are going to rob a bank, and walk nearby to get away, be sure to change your shirt.

This bank was robbed about a year ago in the wintertime. The robber ran from the bank about 3 blocks, but it was so cold, he lost his breath and couldn't run any further. So, to try to not be identified with the same clothes on, he took off his shirt. He was found less than 15 minutes after the robbery. The police stopped him b/c he looked suspicious.... shirtless and it was about 35 degrees.
