RALEIGH, N.C. — A 57-year-old man was charged late Thursday with attacking a woman inside a Raleigh home, police said Friday.

Clarence Jeffrey George was charged with attempted first-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping and assault by strangulation. He was being held in the Wake County jail under a $2 million bond.

Police said George and a woman were at a mutual acquaintance's home on Lumpkin Street at about 11 p.m. Thursday when George attacked the woman.

The woman was able to escape and call for help. She didn't have any injuries that required hospitalization, police said.

George was convicted of second-degree murder in Mecklenburg County in 1995 and was released from prison in 2008, according to state Department of Correction records.
