— Goldsboro police charged a man on New Year's Day with attempted murder for the shooting of a woman in September.

Derrick Raymont Best, 27, was also charged three counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property.

Investigators say that Best shot Alica Griffin in the 1700 block of Maple Street on Sept. 24, 2008.

The state Department of Correction listed Best as an absconder from probation. He had been sentenced to probation in July for resisting an officer and driving with a revoked license.

Best has been convicted of crimes at least 13 times in Wayne County since 1998, including possession of a firearm by a felon, assault on a female, resisting an officer, affray and drug possession, according to DOC records.

The article: "Best has been convicted of crimes at least 13 times in Wayne County since 1998, including possession of a firearm by a felon, assault on a female, resisting an officer, affray and drug possession, according to DOC records."

Got to protect your self and loved ones these days because obviously the justice system isn't doing it.

Just shows that the judges are far too easy on offenders. Put them in jails and prisons instead of probation. The judges in these cases need to be held accountable. Put some teeth in the laws that make a judge liable if an offender is placed on probation and decides to continue to do wrong. Judges would then put these criminals in prison because they (judges) do not want to be held accountable for these criminals activities while on probation. It would at least make judges think about their actions instead of just placing offenders on probation.
