Man Charged After Toddler Burned With Iron

Posted July 20, 2007

— A local man was charged Friday with felony child abuse after his 20-month old son was burned with an iron, authorities said.

Darrell Eugene Matthews Jr., 25, of 143 W. Mountain Drive, is charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. He was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $10,000 secured bond.

Investigators said Matthews' 4-year-old child witnessed the abuse.

Erica Elizabeth Matthews, 22, of the same address, was charged with being an accessory after the fact to abuse and was being held on a $2,000 unsecured bond. Authorities said she failed to report the abuse and gave investigators contradictory information.

Both children were placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

Why are people blaming the mother more than the father (and I use the terms only in the most biological of fashions)? Yes, she may be culpable for covering up what he did, but the actions he is accused of are more vile.

It may be that she is another survivor of his abuse, as is often the case, which may serve as an explanation, not an excuse.

Pathetic! People like this shouldn't be allowed to reproduce!

Why is it that numbskulls like this can reproduce without problems while more intelligent mature people cannot?

    May he rot in prison.

Nancy.... that is sooooo doggone funny. I had 2 children by 18 years of age because my parents convinced me i would go to hell for premarital sex. This really hits home to me. I would put my daughter on BC the second she was old enough if i had one.

Stick the iron to him and her and see how they both feel. Maybe I don't have a right to say this because I'm not yet a mother...but if people don't want their children, give them up for adoption. Don't abuse the child. I'm sure kids have their days when they are wild, but for the love of God, why severely abuse a child. Don't take your fustrations out on the child.

I'll bet they didn't have sense enough to feed and water a dog, but yet they need a child. Everyone wants to have them, but then no-one wants to raise them.

Shame on the mother. Both kids should be removed from the home immediately. Kids look for parents to protect them, not harm them. My prayers are with this child. This is probably not the first time. Only this couldn't be hide.

They'll probably get off with a slap on the wrist, the kids will be sent back to the abusive location and then something worse is going to happen.

I say pin his azz down and burn him with an iron - repeatedly. These stories make me sick - I agree - eradication is the only solution. This man WILL ABUSE AGAIN. Abuse is not a one-time event.
