LITTLETON, N.C. — Halifax County sheriff's deputies have charged a Littleton man in connection after nine puppies were put into a bag and thrown into a creek.

Mark Scott Lane, 50, was charged with seven felony counts of cruelty to animals.

Sgt. Doug Pilgreen said that nine pit bull-mix puppies, including two that were dead, were put into a large, plastic bag and then thrown into a creek near Weaver Chapel Road sometime between Sept. 9 and Sept. 10.

A nurse who lives on Lake Gaston said she was taking a walk when she heard strange noises coming from the creek and spotted the bag.

The seven puppies that were still alive when the bag was found were turned over to Hope Animal Rescue, but all of them have since died, Pilgreen said.

Lane was being held Wednesday in the Halifax County jail under a $35,000 bond. His first court appearance was set for Oct. 20.
