KALISPELL, Mont. — State wildlife officials say a man is recovering after being attacked by a protective grizzly bear while on a walk with his daughter and two dogs.
Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials say the bear charged the man on a trail about 3 ½ miles northeast of Whitefish on Sunday.
An investigation found the nan and his daughter had unknowingly walked between what is believed to be an adult female grizzly and her cubs, who were feeding on a deer carcass.
The man deployed pepper spray and the bear ran off. He was taken to Kalispell Regional Hospital with non-life threatening bites to his head, shoulder and wrist.
The area where the attack occurred has been closed to the public until further notice. FWP officials have removed the deer carcass. They are not trying to trap the bears.
