Man arrested in Roanoke Rapids homicide

Posted March 13, 2009

— The Halifax County Sheriff's Office arrested a man in a slaying outside a Roanoke Rapids home early Friday.

At 12:40 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a call from a man saying that he had shot someone and that the victim was lying in his front yard.

First responders found Delwin Jones, 31, of Roanoke Rapids, lying in the front yard of a Huckleberry Bottom Road home that belongs to Mayo Hawkins, 55. Jones had suffered a gunshot wound in his torso, deputies said.

Paramedics took Jones to Halifax Regional Hospital. He was then airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies detained Hawkins at the scene and then charged him with murder. Deputies said they found the suspected murder weapon in a pile of debris behind the home.

Investigators believe that Hawkins became angry during an altercation with Jones and then pulled out a shotgun and fired a round.

Hawkins was being held in the Halifax County Jail without bond Friday morning. His first court appearance was set for April 22.

I was wondering why six deputy cars wizzed by my house at 1am.

GT I don't where you get your stats, but that is totally wrong that 47% of a pop has been jailed in the last 5 years. Must be the company you keep.

about the same Budman. Like I said - it is a snapshot of what is the norm in these small towns.

Do you know that over 47% of the population of RM and about the same for RR has been jailed in the last 5 years at one time or another? That when we did backgrounds on applicants, only 1 out of 9 were clean and had no priors. We made jokes about if this was the "one".. It gets worse in some of the other coastal towns that have lost textiles and have not replaced them.

    that's not Randy Parton!

I guess Rocky Mount must be even worse, since you have to come to Roanoke Rapids for employment?

  • Go GT Mar 13, 2009

Skins I live in Rocky Mount and work in RR- so I know first hand what the population is like. Heck I have employed a majority of them. I do not think I am better, but I am not stupid enough to shoot someone outside a gas station, my front yard, or traffic multiple kilos so I can avoid doing a honest days work. That's what these small towns with limited jobs for highschool grads or dropouts have resorted to.

You just never know in cases like this.....it happened at 12:40 am I believe the article said - Did this guy think it was a break-in and then it became an argument? Yes, the other man lost his life, but don't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

Please Please Please GT find another way to make yourself feel superior to other folks.

All of this bashing of the "majority" of people in a community smaller than yours is juvinille. I don't live in Roanoke Rapids but do work there. The true majority do work and many earn good living and enjoy the normal middle class lives. (While avoiding city trafic)

Do you think that people in Boston NY and DC laugh at the pitiful stupid people who live in little Raleigh? very sad.

Reread your statement Go GT. "snapshot of a majority"? Come on...

  • Go GT Mar 13, 2009

This is a snapshot of a majority of the eastern NC residents in these small towns. Jobs are scarce and crimes are thriving. very sad.
