Man arrested in Durham shooting death

— A Durham man faces first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of a 17-year-old last week.

Erick Calderon, 17, of 4001 Meriwether Drive Apartment C-1, was arrested Sunday, Durham police said in a release. He is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Alejandro Emir Denis-Terron, of Camellia Drive, was shot around 11 p.m. Thursday at a house on Herbert Street, according to police.

Denis-Terron was standing in the yard with a group of other men when the shooting happened, police said. Investigators said they don't know what the motive was, and their investigation was continuing.

    If we could convince people to value their own lives, it might be easier for them to value others'.

    This is horrible. I work with kids, and all too often I see the names of current or former kids of mine in the crime logs, whether as criminals or corpses.

    My preference is that we live slow, die old, and don't care about what the corpse looks like, so long as there are lots of wrinkles from smiling for good reasons.

    What makes people think that their lives and others' lives can be bartered for a moment's worth of pride or a two-hour high?
