Man arrested in Durham robbery

Walter Jerome Kelly, 38, of Elizabeth Street, was arrested on Thursday in the 900 block of Lee Street as the result of a Crime Stoppers tip. He was wanted on two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping and felony conspiracy.

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man was arrested Thursday night in connection with an October robbery, police said. 

Walter Jerome Kelly, 38, of Elizabeth Street, was arrested on Thursday in the 900 block of Lee Street as the result of a Crime Stoppers tip. He was wanted on two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping and felony conspiracy.

Police believe that Walter Kelly and his son Dearngre Trayvon Kelley, 18, robbed two men at gunpoint on Queen Street, near East Main Street, late Oct. 26.

Dearngre Kelley was arrested Nov. 9 and placed in the Durham County Jail under a $1,020,000 secured bond.

He faces charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping, felony conspiracy and felony probation violation.

State Department of Correction records show that Dearngre Kelley was convicted on Aug. 4 of two counts of accessory after the fact of felony armed robbery. He was given a split sentence, in which he served two months in jail and then went on probation.

His father also has a criminal record, dating from 1990, DOC records show. Walter Kelly was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in 2006 and served two years in prison. He also has convictions for assault inflicting serious injury, assault on a female and drug possession.
