Man arrested in death of Durham store owner

— A 59-year-old man was arrested for the shooting death of a Durham store owner on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Barry Wayne Kaalund faces murder charges in the death of Ronnie Sturdivant, owner of Urban Merchants, at 605 West Chapel Hill St.

Officers responding to a call about gunshots around 4:30 p.m. found Sturdivant lying on the basement floor of his store. Sturdivant had been shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

    I only met the man once. He was a saint for the black community in Durham who made a difference in the lives he touch in the Bull City and his senseless death is tragic. Ronnie Sturdiviant was not only a businessman but a leader in the utmost sense of the word. He will be truly missed.

    FYI: The Urban Merchants Center on Chapel Hill Street was once the Washington Duke Motor Inn and before that was the Holiday Inn.
