Man arrested in Chapel Hill bank robbery

Durham police arrested a 54-year-old man Friday afternoon, a day after a Chapel Hill bank was robbed.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Durham police arrested a 54-year-old man Friday afternoon, a day after a Chapel Hill bank was robbed.

George Leavon Gattis, of an unknown address, was charged with common-law robbery for the Thursday morning robbery of the Wachovia bank, at 101 Banks Drive in Chapel Hill. No weapon was used and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen in the robbery, investigators said.

Chapel Hill police worked with the Orange County Sheriff's Office to develop information about the suspect's identity. Durham police officers located Gattis in the 900 block of Driver Street Friday.

According to the state Department of Correction records, Gattis was convicted of second-degree burglary, misdemeanor breaking-and-entering and larceny in Orange County in the early 1980s.
