Man arrested for rape at UNC Hospitals housing facility

A 55-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection with a rape that happened Friday at a temporary housing facility for UNC Hospitals.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A 55-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection with a rape that happened Friday at a temporary housing facility for UNC Hospitals. 

Campus police at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said Rafael Sierra Gaono assaulted a woman at the SECU Family House on Old Mason Farm Road. 

The house provides accommodations for families of patients who are being treated for critical illness or injury at UNC Hospitals or clinics.

Gaono, charged with second-degree rape in the incident, was in the Orange County jail Tuesday under a $40,000 bond. Gaono was scheduled to make a first court appearance Tuesday at 2 p.m.

No other information about the assault was released.
