Sanford, N.C. — Authorities in Lee County arrested a man they say broke into a home on Dover Street in Sanford last week.
Luis Fernando Moreno, 20, of Thornwood Drive was arrested and charged with felonious breaking and entering and injury to real property.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Moreno broke into the home of Cash Jay McDonald just after 9:30 a.m. last Friday.
McDonald was asleep at the time and was awaken by a loud sound. He quickly realized there was a stranger in his home.
"I found the screwdriver inside. He tried to pry the door open," he said. "I could see the shadows coming around the corner."
When McDonald came face to face with Moreno he told him he would shoot him. Moreno then ran out of the home, jumped in his car and tried to get away. Authorities said he did not make it past the driveway before he crashed.
"Then there was the second face-to-face meeting," McDonald said. "At the end of a gun, and this time it lasted a whole lot longer."
McDonald said he held Moreno at gunpoint and waiting for authorities to arrive.
"He kept telling me he wanted to get out of the situation and I kept telling him I had a gun," McDonald said.
Deputies showed up at the home and arrested Moreno.
Moreno has since bonded out of jail.
