Man arrested after Fayetteville officer injured in foot chase

Police said that during a traffic stop along Jim Johnson Road, a mo-ped driver – identified as Antion Douglas Jones, 28 – showed officers jail release papers for identification, then tried to drive away when officers asked if he had anything illegal on him.

The officers managed to get Jones off the mo-ped, but he took off on foot and got away from officers who chased him, police said. Police found two handguns in the mo-ped.

One officer injured his knee during the foot chase, police said. He is recovering after undergoing surgery.

Jones was arrested Thursday evening under charges of possession of a firearm by a felon; carrying a concealed weapon; resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer by fleeing arrest; driving with a revoked license and various traffic offenses.

He was placed in the Cumberland County jail under a $25,500 secured bond.

Police planned to confer with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to see if Jones could face federal charges.

Police said that he has several pending state charges, including felony manufacturing of cocaine, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. He was given two years' probation for 2010 felony drug convictions, according to state Department of Correction records.
