Man arrested after fatal shooting in Durham

Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Saturday evening on Zelko Court.

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Saturday evening on Zelko Court.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at 5:11 p.m. at #18 Zelko Court. When they arrived, officers found Joseph Best, 41, of #18 Zelko Court lying on the steps. Paramedics transported him to Duke University Hospital where he later died.

Best’s half-brother, Lewis Scarlette, 56, also of #18 Zelko Court, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

He was being held Sunday at the Durham County Jail under a $500,000 bond. The charge against Scarlette will be upgraded to murder, police said.
