Man arrested after Edgecombe deputy's patrol car shot up
A Rocky Mount man was arrested Tuesday morning after firing a shotgun at a patrol car as an Edgecombe County deputy responded to a domestic disturbance, authorities said.

Marquan Lamont Underhill, 22, of 1736 Thru St., was charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, injury to personal property, domestic criminal trespassing and possession of a stolen firearm, Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said.
The deputy, whose name wasn't released, wasn't injured in the incident, but his patrol car was shot 12 times, Knight said.
A woman called for help at about 8:30 a.m., saying a man was on her porch at 1008 Wave Lane with a shotgun. By the time the deputy arrived, the woman had gotten out of the house unharmed, but the man was still on the porch, Knight said.
The man opened fire on the approaching patrol car and then fled into some nearby woods when the deputy returned fire, Knight said. Deputies set up a perimeter around the area and apprehended the man with the shotgun shortly before 10 a.m.
The woman told investigators that she had broken up with the man on Sunday, and she saw him approach her house Tuesday morning with the shotgun, which he put under his chin like he planned to kill himself, Knight said. He then drove off, allowing her to escape with two children, before apparently returning to the house, the sheriff said.
