— A Roanoke Rapids man faces new charges after allegedly kidnapping and threatening a woman who had already accused him of assaulting her.

The woman said that Lionel Maurice Martin, 29, grabbed her from behind while she sat on her back porch at her Gum Chapel Church Road Sunday.

Martin dragged the woman inside and held her down on the bed while he demanded that she drop charges against him, deputies said. He disabled two phones in the house, so the victim could not call for help.

Martin held the woman for about 45 minutes until she was able to escape out the front door and get help from neighbors, Halifax County Deputy Stanley Rodwell said.

Lt. Chuck Hasty and Sgt. Doug Pilgreen located Martin several hours later with the victim in her car.

Martin fled on foot, but was tracked to his home by deputies and K9 Handler Philip Man and his K9 partner Rex. Martin was arrested without incident.

The victim had previously taken out charges against Martin for assault on a female and threatening phone calls.

He faces fresh charges of first-degree kidnapping, felony breaking and entering, felony intimidating a witness and two counts of resisting a public officer. He was also charged with two counts of assault on a female and one count of threatening phone calls.

Martin was being held in the Halifax County jail without bond Monday. His first court date was set for May 7.

Thank goodness she was able to escape.

"???? If she was able to get away once and go to a neighbor for safety----why was she later found in the car with him...."

Obviously because he caught up with her again.

Sounds like a guy who just can't take no for an answer. Jail him and find him a nice old boyfriend to keep him company in there. Maybe he'll find out what the word no means then.

    Praying for his victim.

    God bless.

Makes you wonder what really happened here. Did she lie the first time, make hime mad, and he went to talk to her; or is he obsessed with her; or is this a boyfriend/girlfriend thing like DOJ says?? There is a lot here that sounds fishy. WRAL, you need to look into this story more. There is a lot here that you didn't expand on.

djo "I'm just saying he might not be a threat to society so much as he is to this one woman". One woman not enough? Does she have to be "hurt" or killed before something is done.

I will be glad when he has his day in court to face all the charges that will land him a lot of years behing bars. He deserve everyone of them. Glad that the victim has not hurt this time.

While this case has charges that sound like 30 years in prison, it also sounds like a bad break up and a hard headed, can't-believe-it, man, for he must have let her walk around in the house after holding her down to talk, and he 'fled' home where had to know they would find him. Then I read he made her leave in her car and they were caught. I'm confused. Maybe he thought he could talk 'sense' to the woman. I'm just saying he might not be a threat to society so much as he is to this one woman. IF they are old flames, then I hope she will size it up right and tell the authorities so that a proper punishment will occur. There's been married people who act about as bad and handled it in house. If he is a stranger or just a guy, then there is more trouble than strikes me, but something of the tone, not the facts, say it is a can't-believe-it boyfriend. She isn't hurt, and the man can't seem to believe her want to be rid of him. Could that be it? Or is he a madman?
