— Police charged a Rocky Mount man after he allegedly stole another man's two pit bulls Monday and shot and killed one dog.

The victim found that a male and a female pit bull were missing from a secured location on his property, police said. A witness told the man that his dogs were at 1026 Nashville Road.

The man went to that address and spoke with Gregory Earl Horton-Daugherty, 25, police said. The dog owner discovered that his male pit bull had been shot and killed. He retrieved the female pit bull safely and the male dog's carcass.

Police arrested Horton-Daugherty on two counts of larceny of a dog and one count each of cruelty to animals and discharging a firearm in the city limits. He was given a $10,000 bond.

I don't understand what happened he never acted like that before. What some ignorant dog owners say after their dog runs across the yard with a child in it's mouth.

Hey Deathrow....I'm not a pitbull owner...but I sure would love to see you back up this statement with your sources...that's a huge blanket statement

"you think your pit bull is, if provoked at the right moment, your "marshmallow" would terribly injure or kill a child. THAT IS A FACT."....zman

Wow! So many people post as animal lovers, but seem to be so "uneducated" about animal breeds. I'm with Z Man. I don't have a lot of sympathy for the dead pit bull. I'm getting tired of people ignoring the facts and saying its not the dog, its the owner. There is some truth to that. But you say it like its the only truth. Certain breeds are prone to certain traits, REGARDLESS of their owner. I promise you, no matter how much of a "marshmallow" you think your pit bull is, if provoked at the right moment, your "marshmallow" would terribly injure or kill a child. THAT IS A FACT. I don't care who owns the pit bull or how they treat it, it can and will destroy a child. You can live ignorantly if you wish. But as soon as someone's pit bull nearly kills someone, they probably also thought the same thing about their pit. Certain breeds of animals have no place in populated areas. Its why we don't allow alligators or tigers in city limits. Pits will be outlawed before long. One less pit. Whoope

I understand your fear but I've owned pits in the past that were marshmellows. It's all in how they are raised no matter what kind of dog it is. Glad your children are okay......

My comment is to Z Man. I guess the old saying that ignorance is bliss comes to play here. Just because it is a pit bull doesnt mean anything. If you treat a dog horribly and with neglect, a poodle could go after someone. It is not about the breed, it is about the owners and their treatment for the animal. I have a pitbull and she is the most well mannered dog in our neighborhood. All the children love her and she has never shown aggregation once toward anyone. It is how you train them to be. Since pitbulls are some of the most loyal dogs, they do whatever it takes to please their master, such as fighting and biting. If you train them, there is nothing to be scared of. I have personally seen a chihuahua do damage to a child because it was attacking him. Do you think that these dogs shouldn't be in residential areas? I am saddened to hear that a dog was killed and this person will get what is coming to him in some form or fashion.

The MINIMUM punishment should be that he is rendered physically incapable of firing a gun again.

Now wait a minute - don't be so quick to judge. I lived next to a pitbull and I was scared to death for my children. I saw the dog charge a(nother) neighbors 12 year old and veer off towards their 2 year old. The toddlers mother had to get in-between them. I put a nail in my carport column and hung a hatchet on it - just in case I needed it.

These dogs don't belong in a residential neighborhood and just maybe this man was justified. I would have killed my neighbors dog with that hatchet if it came after my kid (and I could get ahold of it). Luckily my neighbor came to their senses and got rid of the dog before some child got attacked. I dont' care what the law says... If I have to kill to protect my kids, I will do so.
