GOLDSBORO, N.C. — An 82-year-old LaGrange man died early Thursday as he walked across U.S. Highway 70 east near Wilber's Barbecue in Goldsboro, police said.

Ralph McKinley Garris' vehicle got stuck in the median, and he tried to walk across the highway to get to his job, police said.

Just before 4 a.m., a mail delivery truck hit him as he crossed the road. Garris died at the scene.

Guy Nelson Basden, 74, of Kinston, was driving the truck, police said. It appeared that the weather and poor visibility could have contributed to the crash. No charges were expected.

Officer Jay Holland of the Goldsboro Police Departments’ Specialized Traffic Enforcement Unit was investigating.
