WHITAKERS, N.C. — A 70-year-old man was convicted Thursday of being part of a drug trafficking ring in Nash County.

William Clinton Hardy, of Whitakers, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for conspiracy to traffic drugs and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Prosecutors said that Hardy was obtained or distributed 822.15 grams of crack cocaine between February 2008 and February 2009. A raid found firearms, 46.9 grams of crack cocaine, digital scales, ammunition and $4,000 in cash at Hardy's house.

Investigators said that Hardy was one of 23 drug dealers caught in Operation Burnout, a federal and local crackdown on cocaine, crack cocaine and marijuana trafficking in Halifax and Nash counties.
