Man, 56, charged with sex crimes against teen girl

Posted August 29, 2008

— Cumberland County sheriff's deputies charged a Hope Mills man for sex crimes involving a teenaged girl.

Detectives arrested Kevin Naughton, 56, of 2611 Odom Road, on Thursday. He faces two charges each of taking indecent liberties with a child and sexual battery.

The 14-year-old victim told deputies that Naughton kissed and touched her inappropriately. Detectives said the crimes occurred between April 1 and Aug. 1.

Naughton was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was set for Friday.

It is because some women make false accusations that it is harder for others to make a legitimate claim;. I think if a person makes a false accusations, that person should get the same punishment the alledged sriminal would have gotten. The first thing is to have a rape kit.
On the other hand, men and women need to "hang out" with people who are about the same age. What is a fifty something man doing around a teenager?
My mom never left me around any men.

    Freddi -
Was this before or after the Nifong case?

    Freddi -
    That is horrible!
Shouldn't they have had the evidence TESTED before the arrest?

A close relative of mine was accused of rape, charged by RPD, with absolutely no evidence...only the accuser's statement, who was an aquaintance. The night of her claim, he was home and had an alibi. He spent over $20,000 in legal fees, spent 4 nights in jail and 30 days house arrest under an outrageous bond, and almost lost his job. After 3 continuances waiting for SBI lab results, no probable cause was found and the case dismissed. If that wasn't ridiculous enough, the DA then would not proceed to go after the accuser for false arrest or malicious prosecution because he said "it would be just a misdemeaner, and it's not worth it". The RPD jumped to conclusions, the DA did a "Nifong", and another false accuser is left to do it all again. Those who make up false claims should be charged with equal felony counts and consequences.

Women lie about rape and such all the time. In divorces, it'san epidemic! Why no picture of the "girl"? First off, I would investigate the girl. Is she mentally unstable?

jlh4jdj- Well said, I totally agree with you. I'm glad that I'm not on trial with the people on this board as jurers. They are ready to hang this guy before he has been tried.

Rev. RB- There you go judging again..

If innocent until proven guilty, why, oh why, does the media publish photo's and name names as soon as allegations are made? Even if this man is innocent, his reputation has been damaged just by the publicity and accusations. Some people who read that he was charged with this crime may never see the results of the court case. Maybe the media should report convicted crimes with photographs and names...maybe then they would be more credible.

what took this young girl so long to tell someone April - Aug. lets wait to see if this is true before we bash the man to death

    I agree. Why so long?
Any legal people on board here?
Is there evidence investigators have that they are not sharing with the media?
If not, people remember, it's just an allegation.
