HENDERSON, N.C. — A 30-year-old man died in a Vance County house fire early Monday. A woman and her adult son who were also in the house escaped, but the mother fell and broke her arm, according to family members and emergency officials.

Emergency crews found Carlton Rudd Jr.'s body on the second floor of the house at 3100 Highway 158 Business just after midnight. He was a friend of the family, according to fire officials.

There was no word on what started the fire. The State Bureau of Investigation, the Vance County Sheriff's Office and fire marshal were investigating.
