— A 24-year-old Johnston County man died early Saturday after his car hit a tree on Old Fairgrounds Road, north of Benson, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Investigators said Lucas Currin, of Benson, was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer along Massengill Pond Road at about 3:30 a.m. when he lost control and ran off the road into a ditch. The car then crossed a driveway and struck a tree in the 5500 block of Old Fairgrounds Road.

Currin died at the scene. His girlfriend, Jessica Coats, 22, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that authorities said did not appear to be life-threatening.

No information about the cause of the wreck was released, although officials said speed was not a factor.
