Make them official
A bill filed Wednesday would name an official state fossil, frog, salamander, marsupial and folk artist.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The list of official state symbols would get five items longer under a bill filed Wednesday.
Added to the list of official rocks, foods, festivals and critters would be:
State fossil: The fossilized teeth of the megalodon shark.
Frog: The pine barrens tree frog (Hyla andersonii)
Salamander: The marbled salamander (Ambystoma opacum)
Marsupial: The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana)
Folk Art: The whirligigs created by Vollis Simpson.
Possums, of course, attracted attention earlier this year because of their participation in certain New Year's Eve festivities.
