Made by Mom Gift Guide: Little Lamb Big Chicken car reminder tags

Editor's Note: Little Lamb Big Chicken is the first local business to be featured in our 2014 Made by Mom and Dad Gift Guide.
Jackie Karlic remembers that afternoon last March well. She pulled up to her two-year-old daughter's north Raleigh preschool, locked the car doors, chatted with a few mom friends and went to her daughter's classroom.
When she went to put down the infant car seat that her newborn son was in, she realized she'd made a terrible mistake. Her little boy was still in the car.
She rushed out of her daughter's classroom, sprinted to the car and found him, nestled in his seat, asleep. He was fine. He'd been on his own for no more than five minutes, Karlic said.
Karlic was not fine. The incident played over and over in her head. She talked to friends about it. She wondered how things could have gone wrong. And she was so thankful that it all happened on a day in March that wasn't too hot or too cold, in a church parking lot and only for five minutes.
She'd heard of other parents accidentally leaving their young children in hot cars in the summer, a forgetful moment that sometimes can lead to tragic results. But, like most any parent, she figured it would never happen to her. (Gene Weingarten, a reporter for The Washington Post, wrote a brilliant and prize-winning story on this a few years ago).
Once it did, she tried to figure out a way to keep it from ever happening again. Friends sent her ideas such as taking off a shoe and keeping it in the back with her child, but none of them worked for her.
So she decided to create something that would - reminder tags that hang from the car's mirror or shifter. She shared the tags with her friends, who loved them. Her husband suggested she sell them.
Little Lamb Big Chicken (named after her daughter's preschool and her son's nickname) was created in June. Karlic sells the tags through Etsy.com.
Right now, they come in two styles with slogans "Just a little reminder that baby's behind ya'" and "If you love me, you won't leave me ... in the backseat").
Karlic said she's gotten all kinds of response to her tags from how can I get one to why would I ever need one.
She's heard other moms say things like "I don't think I would need this because how can you forget?" Karlic said.
"I make this," she said, "because it did happen to me."
Karlic hopes her tags build awareness about the danger, keep kids safe and help parents out. She has plans to grow the tag's designs and slogans. She's working to get the word out about her product and add to the places where it's sold.
"It's possible to make that mistake," she said. "You just hope out of the car and hit the lock button ..."
The tags could make a great stocking stuffer for moms, dads, grandparents and other caregivers. Check the Little Lamb Big Chicken Facebook page to learn more.
