Editor's Note: This is the latest in our series on local parents featured in our Made by Mom and Dad Gift Guide.
I first met Kristin Schmalzbauer at one of Go Ask Mom's events at North Hills this year.
It was clear that the mom, local teacher and author is passionate about what she does - teaching and interacting with children and passing on her love of reading.
When I first wrote about Schmalzbauer this fall, she had just one book out - "Broomilda and Crookalinda," published by Apex-based Peak City Publishing.
Since then, a second book - "Harold Hangs On" about a late-blooming leaf named Harold who learns lessons of perseverance and encouragement - has come out. And she's working on a third, "Marvin and Sven and the Rocketship Adventure," which should be available in time for the holidays. She also has a free activity book that's available with purchase of any of her books from her website.
In addition to teaching full time in the classroom and working on her book, Schmalzbauer has had a busy fall. She took part in Peak City Publishing's "Reading and Writing Rodeo," a book fair featuring the local publisher and local authors, and Apex's Trick or Treat on Salem Street, among other events.
"My hope for this holiday season is that families remember that books make wonderful gifts and offer a time to put down the 'screens' and curl up with a book," she tells me. "There truly seems to be nothing more enjoyable for a child than to snuggle up with mom or dad and read a book or have a story read to them."
You can learn more about Schmalzbauer's books, best for preschoolers and young grade schoolers, on her Learning with Laughter website.
