Julianne Walther is today's featured mom in our Made by Mom Gift Guide. I featured Walther, a Cary mom of four who owns Patchwork Memories, back in February.

Walther picked up her quilting hobby about 20 years ago. In 2005, her husband wondered if there was anyway she could make some money to support her "quilting habit," as he put it. They put together a website and Patchwork Memories was born. The business focuses on turning customers' prized T-shirts or treasured clothing or cloth into quilts or stuffed memory bears.

In the last year, Walther has seen some big changes for her business. She's expanded to a staff of nine people and opened an online-only quilting supplies store called Cary Quilting Company.

She is now preparing to open a brick or mortar store at 226 E. Chatham St. in Cary this Saturday. The historic house used to be home to Etc. Crafts, another Cary quilt store that closed because the owner retired.

"We are so excited about having more space," Walther tells me.

And she's adding products too. Patchwork Memories now has Heirloom Holiday Ornaments.

Patchwork Memories is already full for Christmas orders. The staff is very busy working on 56 quilt orders right now. But they are taking orders for January and are gearing up for the very busy graduation season. (And gift certificates always are a great gift idea)!

Go Ask Mom is featuring a dozen local moms as part of our Made by Mom Gift Guide. Check back on Monday for our next featured mom!
