Lynda Loveland: They did it!

For months my daughters have been bugging me to get their ears pierced. I’ve been putting them off because I wasn’t sure they REALLY wanted to do it.

Lucky for me, our family doctor does the piercing. And even luckier, as it turns out, she does both ears at one time with the help of a nurse.

We put the girls in different rooms, smart move, and did Carys first. I’d explained to the girls many, many times what was going to happen and that there would be some initial pain. They said they knew and they were fine with that.

That was before they got a look at the piercing gun. It hasn’t changed much over the years. Carys sat on the exam table and our doctor and nurse assumed the position on each side of her with piercing guns at her lobes. On the count of three, they were gonna do it. I realize that may sound overwhelming for her, but at least we knew we would get BOTH ears pierced.

Carys starts squirming and shrugging her shoulders so much her head practically disappeared into her body! She’s scared, I get it. But we didn’t come this far to go home empty eared! I gave her the song and dance about how her friends went through this too. It would only hurt for a minute, but you’ll have these pretty pierced ears forever. But what finally did it was, “Sweetie we won’t have a reason to go get frozen yogurt if you don’t get your ears pierced!” Bingo!

I leave her crying with my mom (she was fine) and walk down the hall to the room with my oldest inside. Her first question is, “Where’s Carys?” She’s looking VERY nervous at this point. I told her Carys was in the bathroom looking at her earrings in the mirror and we needed to hurry and get hers done so she can look too.

Cam slowly climbs on top of the exam table. This from the girl who does nothing slowly. The doctor and nurse line up on both sides of Cam and instantly she becomes snake-like and somehow starts to slither down off the table! I sit her back up. She says, “Maybe I’m not old enough yet.” She looked like she was on the brink of tears. Getting HER to do it was much easier. I simply said, “so your LITTLE sister just got her ears pierced and you’re going to back out of it?” I know, bad mom. But it worked. She let out a little scream and then it was over. It’s been a week now and they are thrilled with their new look!
